Podcast Side Project: Episode 2

This week, we recorded our 2nd episode of our podcast! (Also quick update, we've changed our podcast name to be The Great Dynamic Range).

From our 1st episode, we decided that from now, we'll use individual microphones so that it's easier to edit everyone's levels individually as we had problems with levels being higher than others. We're also deciding to use better microphones as our 1st episode didn't sound as clear as we thought it'd be.

In the beginning, we were in a bit of a stitch. We had organised for one of our previous lecturers to come in for an interview and we had made questions specifically for him before hand, but we got our dates accidentally mixed up. We were waiting for about 40mins until we realised our error and that he was coming next week.

After we realised, we ran through the hallways and classrooms asking if anyone would like to be interviewed in our podcast as we didn't want to waste anymore time. We asked Sean, the Head of the Tech Department and he agreed!

We only had to change our questions slightly as Sean has also been involved with the audio industry and our questions related to the industry. I was interested to get to know him as I've only seen him around the campus or when I'm booking studio time.

It was surprising to hear that he studied at SAE in 2008 with one of our lecturers Akshay. He is also a drummer and has a twin brother which I thought was cool to know. We asked him questions about his career and his experiences working in the industry and his answers ranged from funny stories and to really bad mistakes.

Sean managed to score an internship at Studio 301 after he graduated from SAE and told us that he's worked with artists ranging of Pete Murray to Bruce Springsteen. So crazy. Other stories he told us include:

- His favourite project he worked on with his brother while studying at SAE

- Doing a 3-month internship at Studio 301 3 TIMES OVER until he finally got a job there

- Working with Action Bronson and that his favourite food is cheese pizza

- Deleting an entire album because the band never got back to him and he needed space on his hard drive, then the band asked for it the next day

and many other stories you can listen to in the podcast. (Link at the top)

After our interview with Sean, we thanked him for coming in to do a last minute interview as we couldn't find anyone else to interview and we would have been stuck otherwise. We continued with the rest of the podcast with our album reviews. It was also great to learn some advice and interesting facts about him as well because as I mentioned earlier, I've never had a conversation with him before.

If you don't know about our segment on album reviews, we each give another person in the group an album to review each week and take turns towards the end of the podcast to review it and also give it a rating. This week, I reviewed Saturation II by Brockhampton which was given to me by Liam. I've heard of there music a bit but never really had the time to listen to them properly so listening through this album has now given me more motivation to go through the rest of their productions. It was also to find interesting facts about them, as I didn't really believe that they had 16 or 17 members in the band. You can listen to the full album review at 31:21 in the podcast.

After the podcast, we also agreed to take turns each week to edit and mix the podcast, which I think is very fair, so then we'd all get learn how to edit a podcast effectively and learn new things as well. I'm always keen to learn how to mix so learning to edit something different like a podcast would be interesting.

Really enjoying this podcast project! I'm always laughing and am always learning something new about everyone each week so I'm keen for our upcoming episodes. I still don't have that much input when we're all conversing as I really don't have the right words to say so I just listen to everyone, but I'm slowly improving. Taking notes on the side also helps with this problem so it's all good!

Next week, we've got our lecturer Pete Trimbacher to interview so we're all pretty excitement to learn more about him. Check out my next blog post of our next episode to see how it went!
