Upcoming Side Projects
Over the break, I made a short lo-fi track and being happy with the outcome, it motivated me to make more songs in that genre, as well as to keep pumping out songs in general. So, for side projects this trimester, I think I'm going to be making tracks (either for interdisciplinary collaboration or not) as it'll push me to keep creating content and just keep putting it out stuff on SoundCloud. I follow an Entrepreneur on Instagram named Gary Vaynerchuk and he posts some pretty motivational quotes and videos. A video that has inspired me the most was about how important content is, and that "if you're not making content, you're not going to win". I'm glad I'll be making it a priority to produce as many tracks as I can by making them side projects as I know it'll become a habit and it would make me a more active artist and will better my online presence.
One of the first tracks I'd like to make is another lo-fi-psychedelic track as I find them quite easy to create. I normally start by creating a beat from a drum kit plugin that I have, have that looped and then just muck around with chord progressions but sometimes, trying to make chords or a melody can be difficult as they can sound like something I've made or heard before. I don't write lyrics to my songs or sing in them and every time I try to, it just doesn't suit the track and the track just sounds better as an instrumental. It'd be cool to have interdisciplinary collaboration with this side project, especially from the animation or graphic design cohort. It'd be nice to have some visuals in the back of the track, and I'll be able to present this track to other platforms (which would help me reach a broader audience) such as YouTube, Vimeo, etc. For the rest of the year, I want to create more lo-fi tracks and compile them into an EP at the end of the year. I hope to also collaborate with other people as well.
Following from my last side project, I'd really like to make another dub track. After making King Pablo, I've been listening to more dub tracks and have discovered more dub artists, which have motivated me to make more tracks in that genre. I'm not as happy with the mixdown of King Pablo and by learning from the mistakes and knowing what to improve on, as well as having new reference tracks under my belt, I'd love to give making a dub track another go. I've collected a lot of samples from Splice.com and only used a pinch of them so I'll have some good foundations to
start on.
Anyway, these are some of the side projects I'd like to start working on. I've briefly started on a lo-fi track and will work on it and hopefully have it finished by the middle of next week. By the end of this week, I'll begin to plan the dub track, gather reference tracks and samples together and will make a start on it after I complete my lo-fi track.
Keep an ear out for more of my progress updates of how I'm goin with these tracks by the end of next week!
