Removing an Error with iZotope RX
So I've recorded drums for three of my tracks for the major project of AUS230 and I noticed the snare track for one of my tracks had an annoyingly loud transient spike before a snare hit, which thankfully only happened once throughout the track. It's not noticeable in the mix with the other instruments but I knew it would cause some problems later if I didn't remove it early, such as building up more of that unwanted frequency, as well as the sound introducing clipping during the mastering stage.
Here's what the transient spike sounded like (can be heard before the second snare hit):
I used iZotope's RX 5 Advanced Audio Editor, which helps with repairing, restoring and enhancing audio files (Robjohns, 2016). I'm inexperienced with using iZotope RX nor any other iZotope plugins but was glad this problem showed up so then I was finally able to use it and learn about its features.
I imported the damaged snare track into iZotope RX and it was easy to spot the error visually which I have highlighted below using the lasso tool. By using this tool I was able to manually draw the area that I wanted to remove. I then pressed delete and it subtly removed the sound while still maintaining the tail of the previous snare hit. I've had to remove the error twice to remove it completely.
Here's what the snare track sounded like after having the transient spike removed:
I know it was only a minor error to fix but from using iZotope RX 5, I went on to do more research on the other features they had that I could use in the future. A video from the product manager of iZotope shared a couple of features and tips that I've never used such as using Instant Process, De-Plosive, Leveler, Corrective EQ, Deconstruct, Module Chain, and Adaptive Phase Rotation. I'm currently mixing and mastering some tracks from my friend's punk band which I recorded live, and I've had a few issues with some of the recordings so I'll definitely be using those features to help repair some of the audio tracks.
